Born in Lakenheath 1878. Possibly his birth registration was corrupted as "Eliza" leading to some transcriptions having him as female. The assumption is that
the registration in Mildenhall in Q1-1879 4A:593 of Eliza Mackender is him.
1881 census... Aged 3, he was living at High Street,Lakenheath with his father- George McENDER [43] farm labourer; mother- Sarah Ann (née SMITH)[30] and sister- Ellen [6 months]. All were born in Lakenheath. 1891 census...Aged 13, labourer, he was lodging with his mother, widow, (laundress) at High Street, Lakenheath with Mary Kent, widow. 1901 census... Aged 23, labourer, he was living with his widowed mother (now Sarah HAMMOND) at High Street, Lakenheath. His mother had married Joseph HAMMOND in 1893 but he died in 1900. He married Harriett PALMER [14-7-1872] in 1904. 1911 census...Aged 34, a labourer on threshing machine, married and living at High Street, Lakenheath with his wife Harriett [39], daughter Ada [9-1-1908]; son Ernest [5-4-1909] and daughter Jessie [14-9-1910], all were born in Lakenheath. One child had died, Ada [1906-1906] They went on to have 3 more daughters, Laura [26-2-1912], Hilda [19-12-1914] and Ruby [4-7-1915]. |

Enlisted in Norwich. On the night of 21st/22nd January 1916 the Germans exploded a mine under the trenches in front of The Bluff, creating a crater 60 x 40 yards. About 100 men were either killed, buried alive or injured in the explosion. CWGC records 45 of the 2nd Suffolks killed, 24 of these being commemorated on the Menin Gate. |
